These payments are taxed differently and serve different purposes.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"311\" data-end=\"519\">\n<li data-start=\"311\" data-end=\"432\">\n<p data-start=\"313\" data-end=\"432\">A <strong data-start=\"315\" data-end=\"333\">regular salary<\/strong> is paid for active, value-creating work within the company (e.g. sales, development, marketing).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"433\" data-end=\"519\">\n<p data-start=\"435\" data-end=\"519\">A <strong data-start=\"437\" data-end=\"459\">board member\u2019s fee<\/strong> is paid for fulfilling management or administrative duties.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"521\" data-end=\"663\">If you are both the <strong data-start=\"541\" data-end=\"563\">owner and employee<\/strong> of your Estonian company, you may choose to pay yourself one or the other\u2014or a combination of both.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"665\" data-end=\"705\">Taxation for Estonian tax residents<\/h4>\n<ul data-start=\"707\" data-end=\"925\">\n<li data-start=\"707\" data-end=\"925\">\n<p data-start=\"709\" data-end=\"738\">Regular salary is subject to:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"741\" data-end=\"925\">\n<li data-start=\"741\" data-end=\"770\">\n<p data-start=\"743\" data-end=\"770\">24% <strong data-start=\"747\" data-end=\"770\">personal income tax<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"773\" data-end=\"793\">\n<p data-start=\"775\" data-end=\"793\">33% <strong data-start=\"779\" data-end=\"793\">social tax<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"796\" data-end=\"838\">\n<p data-start=\"798\" data-end=\"838\">1.6% <strong data-start=\"803\" data-end=\"838\">employee unemployment insurance<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"841\" data-end=\"883\">\n<p data-start=\"843\" data-end=\"883\">0.8% <strong data-start=\"848\" data-end=\"883\">employer unemployment insurance<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"886\" data-end=\"925\">\n<p data-start=\"888\" data-end=\"925\">2% <strong data-start=\"891\" data-end=\"925\">mandatory pension contribution<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"927\" data-end=\"1067\">Estonian residents are also entitled to a basic tax-free income allowance (up to \u20ac500\/month), which gradually decreases as salary increases.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1069\" data-end=\"1290\">If you <strong data-start=\"1076\" data-end=\"1104\">live and work in Estonia<\/strong>, you must pay both income and social taxes in Estonia. This gives you access to local <strong data-start=\"1191\" data-end=\"1231\">health insurance and social benefits<\/strong>\u2014which you can only receive from <strong data-start=\"1264\" data-end=\"1289\">one country at a time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"1292\" data-end=\"1333\">Foreign residents and digital nomads<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1335\" data-end=\"1515\">If the person receiving a salary is <strong data-start=\"1371\" data-end=\"1403\">not an Estonian tax resident<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1408\" data-end=\"1436\">does not work in Estonia<\/strong>, salary taxes should be paid in the country where they actually live and work.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1517\" data-end=\"1568\">Board member fees, however, follow different rules:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1569\" data-end=\"1830\">\n<li data-start=\"1569\" data-end=\"1694\">\n<p data-start=\"1571\" data-end=\"1694\">If the board member is <strong data-start=\"1594\" data-end=\"1626\">not an Estonian tax resident<\/strong>, Estonia still requires 20% income tax on the board member\u2019s fee.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1695\" data-end=\"1830\">\n<p data-start=\"1697\" data-end=\"1830\"><strong data-start=\"1697\" data-end=\"1711\">Social tax<\/strong> is paid either in Estonia or in the board member\u2019s country of residence\u2014depending on where they claim social benefits.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4 data-start=\"1832\" data-end=\"1870\">Important note for digital nomads<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1872\" data-end=\"2210\">If you&#8217;re a <strong data-start=\"1884\" data-end=\"1901\">digital nomad<\/strong> without fixed tax residency, tax liability can become complex. You must still pay taxes <strong data-start=\"1990\" data-end=\"2003\">somewhere<\/strong>. The general rule is: you should pay income and social taxes in the country where you <strong data-start=\"2090\" data-end=\"2118\">physically stay and work<\/strong>. If you don\u2019t, another country may later claim that you owe taxes under their jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2212\" data-end=\"2469\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\"><strong data-start=\"2212\" data-end=\"2224\">Lead-in:<\/strong><br data-start=\"2224\" data-end=\"2227\" \/>In Estonia, whether you pay yourself a salary or a board member\u2019s fee affects how\u2014and where\u2014your taxes are paid.
